Installation of Photovoltaic Panels onto Existing Almshouses

CLIENT  The Richmond Charities

DATES  Commissioned 2022

The aim of this project is to reduce energy bills for elderly residents, with limited means, in existing almshouses through integrating solar panels and external batteries.

The sites include Grade II and II* Listed Buildings, that are ‘planning sensitive’, requiring unobtrusive solar panel designs sensitive to the public realm. Seven planning applications have been approved to date. Using evidence-based design, the projects benefit from optimal panel placement, orientation, and capacity.

In October 2024, we were pleased to achieve the top award at The Richmond Society’s Annual Awards, following a commendation the previous year. These projects continue to set a precedent for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and institutions with historic buildings.
